Single Visit Crowns Q & A

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is an artificial tooth cap sealed to your tooth. It’s made from a digital scan, so it fits snugly and rests comfortably in your mouth, where it feels and functions just like a natural tooth.

The team at Mrudula Pingili, DDS, offers same-day, single visit crowns with CEREC® technology, which significantly improves the entire process.

When do I need a dental crown?

Crowns are multi-purpose, and your dentist might recommend one for several reasons, including:

  • Protecting a cracked or broken tooth
  • Restoring a tooth with significant decay
  • Fixing a tooth that’s discolored or misshapen
  • Enhancing a tooth’s structural integrity after a root canal

Your dentist can also use a dental crown in conjunction with a dental implant to replace missing teeth.

What makes a single visit crown unique?

Getting a traditional crown requires two office visits and plenty of wait time. After your dentist removes some enamel from your tooth to make room for your crown, they take an impression of your tooth that they have to send to an off-site lab that fabricates your restoration.

This process can take weeks, during which time you have to wear an uncomfortable temporary crown. Then, you have to come back to your dentist’s office for a second visit to place your permanent restoration.

With a single visit crown at Mrudula Pingili, DDS, your dentist uses CEREC® technology. This innovative technology mills your crown while you wait in the chair. As soon as it is ready, your dentist bonds it to your tooth the same day, saving you a great deal of time and money.

What’s the process for getting a single visit crown?

When you get a same-day, single visit crown at Mrudula Pingili, DDS, your dentist removes some enamel from your tooth to make room for your crown, then takes an impression of your mouth with an intraoral camera. Using those images and computer-assisted design (CAD) tools, your dentist creates a virtual model of your crown and transmits it to an in-office computer-assisted milling (CAM) machine.

Your dentist then loads the milling machine with a small block of ceramic that’s been shaded to match your natural teeth. The machine uses the virtual model of your tooth to mill your crown, so it fits perfectly while you rest comfortably in the dental chair. Once the crown is ready, your dentist checks its fit, then bonds it to your tooth.
